We're Going to Need More Wine by Gabriel Union-Book Review

We're Going to Need More Wine

I finished reading this beautiful book at 11.14pm on 2nd of April, Kenny Rogers’ song called lady is playing in my earphones, followed by Dolly Patrons I will always Love you.

The feeling you get after finishing it, is that of calmness. It’s as though you’ve been having a conversation with Gabriel or rather Nickie Union. I must say my biggest attraction to reading it apart from being recommended to by a friend, was the beautiful cover and the title, contrary to the saying don’t judge a book by its cover.

A few pages into the book, I really couldn’t get what the fuss about the book was. For in the beginning, Gabriel talks about her childhood, and I can’t relate at all.

A friend of mine called Boyani, posts it in her WhatsApp status and am wondering is it just me or are our tastes different, I ask her and she tells me I should continue reading for it only gets juicier.
I then meet another friend of mine called Bilhah, she calls herself the electric lady in one of her social platforms and I can assure you she is electric!

Amidst talking about, careers, boys and books, she mentions it and says ‘hey, go on and finish it, you will love it.’

While fumbling through like the 100th page, I am watching a YouTube channel called Over Twenty-five, and one of the ladies says she is reading it and its good. I mean, what more confirmation do I need to finish it.
Thanks to the three of you, I finally finished it and yes I loved Gabriel’s narration of her life.
I really begun to like it when she started to answer some of the questions that trouble almost every lady. Clearly she had her ride when she was blossoming into the lady she is, and from all she writes, it was a bumpy one but she enjoyed it anyway.

In the book, she delves into matters racism which is a big issue that no one wants to talk about and how it has affected her and the people closest to her, family and friends included, way back from her school days to her career days as an actress.

She brings out the matter of Rape. Which has been happening to lots of people but people fear to come out with a fear of being victimized, or worse told it was their fault. It’s appalling that someone will start asking what were you wearing when it happened. This reminded me of this poster I once saw on twitter saying if you are a rape victim, you should come out and tell your story and the winner will get a prize!

What Prize!!

She beautifully brings out the struggles of a lady in this modern age, especially tackling jobs, their social life and still expected to be a top with all the criticism going on.

Being a fan of basketball it would be unfair to not mention that she is married to Dwayne wade. Through this she also brings out how she finally finds love and I felt my heart melt when Dwayne says he couldn’t picture his life without her…simply amazing.
She also gets to give us a glimpse of what is like in Hollywood especially as a black actress. To people like Prince it’s just salute that we have for you. Rest in peace Prince. People like him made the world a better place.

She later then writes about Homosexuality. Where she couldn’t tell that her friend was gay until later on. To me that shows she was just being a friend, seeing what she wanted to see in her friend Ray.
She then addresses the talk about cancer. Where she lost her friend to metastatic breast cancer. All of these is saying we should really look into our health and if money is the problem, then let’s get this money.

The book is well written in a friend let’s sit down and chat over wine way, relaxed and is a good read.
She signs out with a ‘Take care of yourself’

If you’ve read it let me know your views too.

Cheers.

The Secret lives of Baba Segi's wives

The Secret lives of Baba Segi's Wives by Lola Shoneyin. The book The Secret Lives of Baba Segis Wives  is a tapestry of cultural representations that happen in deeply rooted African homes. Lola Shoneyin, the author, keeps it African and funny from the word go. Baba Segi is the typical African man who boasts of having a nursery of children, many wives who he clearly doesn't know how to please besides being blessed immensely by a third leg. He married a fourth wife who is the only university graduate among all the rest. This pretty lass, faces shame like she has never seen before.Reason being she cant bear a child yet all the other three wives are blessed with children. Misery loves company, is all we can say about the other three women. Later on it turns out they all had a secret that they were determined to keep at the expense of the graduate woman's life.Fate has it that one of their children dies instead. what a twist. its sad.I shed a tear at this point. ...

THE KITE RUNNER BY KHALED HOSSEINI BOOK REVIEW

It’s past midnight, 2am in the night, there is a 1.25 liters soda half drunk on the table and an empty plate; when I finish reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Apart from the whizzing sound from the fridge, the night is silent and very dark. The Christmas weather is aloof so it’s very cold. Despite this, the book I have just finish has some of the darkest parts the night is yet to show the world. Without giving any spoilers I would say I love the ending. The first time it was recommended to me it was by a good friend called Bilha or as she calls herself on Instagram, the Electric lady. This was many moons ago when I had just finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author and it tore my heart open, scattered all the pieces and I am yet to find some. I cried so much I have no simile to portray the actual pain I felt reading it. When I wrote a review about it she told me I should look for the Kite Runner, same feeling. I bought it and had it on my shelf for a c...
