THE MOUNTAINS ECHOED BY KHALED HOSSIENI,

BOOK REVIEW.

…10.25pm on a Wednesday night 2nd of November 2022.

That’s the time I start writing the review on “The Mountains echoed by Khaled Hoseini”

……Before I pour out my heart on how I feel on this book, and be Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra dramatic…haha  (something you will get in the book) this review is dedicated to my good friend M.D who is in a different country in West Africa serving his country just as he did while in Kenya. Salaams, I hope this review will inspire you to walk through Khaled Hosseini’s eyes back in 1952 in Afghanistan, through the book The Mountains echoed.

If I were to rate this book without comparison to other books written by the same author, I would give it 8/10.

Genuinely speaking, the title is a stunner! 10/10.

It stirs your emotions. I was expecting the Mountains to actually literally echo! That is how farfetched my imagination is!

That’s how high my expectations were!

Now the author did not fail me, they echoed though in a different way, I felt it in my heart at the near end and also in different circumstances in the book.

Without giving any spoilers, I loved the folklore at the beginning which by the way I have already told our lastborn Tabby and my nephew Reagan (Who was born when I was reading “What I saw at the Revolution by Peggy Noonan” detailing Ronald Reagan’s reign. So when my sister called me in the middle of the night and asked for a name, I told her, name him Reagan and for the native name call him Chacha. )

I told them the exact folklore and by the longing in their eyes as they listened I could tell they equally loved it and they couldn’t believe that is how it ends! Haha… They wanted me to tell them more about Qais, can you imagine! Haha funny little beings…

I was almost tempted to continue the story with my own expectations but opted to stop where the folklore stops, they couldn’t believe. Thank God I travelled back to the city, when I get back I will have another juicy one to tell them.

In this book my heart beats for Saboor, Gholam, all the characters I can’t name and goodness gracious Abdullah and Paris.

The book which has been written in a very unique format introducing new characters here and there shows how our connections pull us together despite how worlds apart we are. The universe still astounds me!

There are so many beautiful quotes listed, some include:

“….its funny thing, Markos, but people mostly have it backward. They think they live by what they want. But really what guides them is what they’re afraid of. What they don’t want.”

“…human behavior is messy and unpredictable and unconcerned with convenient symmetries.”

Also the fact that the author finishes his acknowledgement after the story ends by telling his wife “I love you.” Total 10/10 to the author!

My good friend Hibaq believes this is a stunning book and I agree!

Grab your copy enjoy.

Yours with love,

Sarafina Robi.

  6. The quotes hooked me up. If only most reviews would be like this. I'm curious about the book but don't have the storyline yet. The premise of this book looks interesting and I can't wait to learn more from the author.

  7. Your review is mesmerizing and the wording articulate. Going by the author Khaled Hosseini I wouldn't have expected anything less of perfect submission. The write-up has intrigued my conscience and ethos subjects my mind to be fed with more.
My last read from the author was "The Kite Runner" almost a decade ago. You have just awakened my appetite for "And The Mountains Echoed" and I need a good date to have a voluptuous read from its content.
    With Kindest regards SR

We're Going to Need More Wine by Gabriel Union-Book Review

We're Going to Need More Wine I finished reading this beautiful book at 11.14pm on 2 nd of April, Kenny Rogers’ song called lady is playing in my earphones, followed by Dolly Patrons I will always Love you. The feeling you get after finishing it, is that of calmness. It’s as though you’ve been having a conversation with Gabriel or rather Nickie Union. I must say my biggest attraction to reading it apart from being recommended to by a friend, was the beautiful cover and the title, contrary to the saying don’t judge a book by its cover. A few pages into the book, I really couldn’t get what the fuss about the book was. For in the beginning, Gabriel talks about her childhood, and I can’t relate at all. A friend of mine called Boyani, posts it in her WhatsApp status and am wondering is it just me or are our tastes different, I ask her and she tells me I should continue reading for it only gets juicier. I then meet another friend of mine called Bilhah, she cal...

The Secret lives of Baba Segi's wives

The Secret lives of Baba Segi's Wives by Lola Shoneyin. The book The Secret Lives of Baba Segis Wives  is a tapestry of cultural representations that happen in deeply rooted African homes. Lola Shoneyin, the author, keeps it African and funny from the word go. Baba Segi is the typical African man who boasts of having a nursery of children, many wives who he clearly doesn't know how to please besides being blessed immensely by a third leg. He married a fourth wife who is the only university graduate among all the rest. This pretty lass, faces shame like she has never seen before.Reason being she cant bear a child yet all the other three wives are blessed with children. Misery loves company, is all we can say about the other three women. Later on it turns out they all had a secret that they were determined to keep at the expense of the graduate woman's life.Fate has it that one of their children dies instead. what a twist. its sad.I shed a tear at this point. ...

THE KITE RUNNER BY KHALED HOSSEINI BOOK REVIEW

It’s past midnight, 2am in the night, there is a 1.25 liters soda half drunk on the table and an empty plate; when I finish reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Apart from the whizzing sound from the fridge, the night is silent and very dark. The Christmas weather is aloof so it’s very cold. Despite this, the book I have just finish has some of the darkest parts the night is yet to show the world. Without giving any spoilers I would say I love the ending. The first time it was recommended to me it was by a good friend called Bilha or as she calls herself on Instagram, the Electric lady. This was many moons ago when I had just finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author and it tore my heart open, scattered all the pieces and I am yet to find some. I cried so much I have no simile to portray the actual pain I felt reading it. When I wrote a review about it she told me I should look for the Kite Runner, same feeling. I bought it and had it on my shelf for a c...
